Letters patent amending the Constitution of the Order of Canada, 1997

Whereas, by letters patent issued on March 21, 1967, the Order of Canada was instituted, erected, constituted and created in Canada;

Whereas those letters patent ordained, directed and appointed that the Order of Canada be governed by the Constitution of the Order of Canada annexed to the letters patent;

Whereas letters patent did issue on May 26, 1997, repealing the Constitution of the Order of Canada and replacing it with the Constitution of the Order of Canada, 1997;

Whereas letters patent did issue on April 22, 2013, amending the Constitution of the Order of Canada, 1997;

And whereas it is desirable and Our Privy Council for Canada has advised that letters patent do issue amending the Constitution of the Order of Canada, 1997;

Therefore, His Excellency the Governor General in Council, on the recommendation of the Prime Minister, orders that letters patent do issue, under the Great Seal of Canada, amending the Constitution of the Order of Canada, 1997 in accordance with the annexed schedule.

To all to whom these presents shall come or whom the same may in any way concern,

GREETING:

Whereas, by Our letters patent issued on March 21, 1967, the Order of Canada was instituted, erected, constituted and created in Canada;

Whereas those letters patent ordained, directed and appointed that the Order of Canada be governed by the Constitution of the Order of Canada annexed to the letters patent;

Whereas letters patent did issue on May 26, 1997, repealing the Constitution of the Order of Canada and replacing it with the Constitution of the Order of Canada, 1997;

Whereas letters patent did issue on April 22, 2013, amending the Constitution of the Order of Canada, 1997;

And whereas it is desirable and Our Privy Council for Canada has advised that letters patent do issue amending the Constitution of the Order of Canada, 1997;

Now know you that We, by and with the advice of Our Privy Council for Canada, do by these presents amend the Constitution of the Order of Canada, 1997 in accordance with the annexed schedule.

In witness whereof, We have caused these Our Letters to be made Patent and We have caused the Great Seal of Canada to be affixed to it.

WITNESS:

Our Right Trusty and Well-beloved David Johnston, Chancellor and Principal Companion of Our Order of Canada, Chancellor and Commander of Our Order of Military Merit, Chancellor and Commander of Our Order of Merit of the Police Forces, Governor General and Commander-in-Chief of Canada.

At Our Government House, in Our City of Ottawa, this sixth day of May in the year of Our Lord two thousand and fifteen and in the sixty-fourth year of Our Reign.

SCHEDULE

1. (1) Paragraph 7(1)(g) of the Constitution of the Order of Canada, 1997 is replaced by the following:

(2) Subsection 7(2) of the Constitution is replaced by the following:

(2) The Governor General may appoint seven persons belonging to the Order as members of the Council for a three-year term.

(2.1) At least two of the persons referred to in subsection (2) shall have experience in one of the following fields:

(3) Subsection 7(4) of the Constitution is replaced by the following:

(4) The Council shall invite the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs to participate in the review of nominations for honorary Companions, Officers and Members.
